What Is a Software Factory?
Last updated:
A software factory is a company that designs, builds and maintains custom software from start to finish, with one team and a process it repeats. MotionInk is one, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic: it takes a product from the idea to launch, keeps improving it, and works in English and Spanish.
How is a software factory different from an agency?
An agency that only designs hands you a design. A software factory takes on the whole product: the idea, the design, the code, the launch and what comes after.
Because the same team repeats the same process on every project, you know how a project runs before it starts, and the people who understand the problem are the ones who build the answer.
How does MotionInk's software factory work?
MotionInk was founded in 2024. The people behind it bring more than ten years of prior experience building software.
We validate every idea with a creative AI proof of concept. Starting from the principle behind the need, we find the solution faster and ship sooner.
- Understand The principle behind the need comes before the feature list: what has to be true for it to work.
- Prove A creative AI proof of concept, ready in days, puts the idea in your hands while it is still cheap to change.
- Build What the proof validated, made properly: readable code, deliberate design, nothing extra.
- Ship and stay We launch, measure and keep improving it, with the same team from start to finish.
What do you receive, and what is yours?
These are the terms of our Conditions of service, which apply to every project together with its proposal.
- A written proposal
- Before work starts it says what we will do, what we will deliver, by when, at what price and how it is paid. A change is asked for in writing, with its effect on price and timeline.
- Deliveries you review
- Each delivery has a review period, ten business days unless the proposal says otherwise, and we fix what does not do what was agreed.
- Ninety days of warranty
- For ninety days from final acceptance, or the period in the proposal, we fix at no cost the defects in the software we made.
- The code is yours
- What we build to measure is yours once it is paid for, handed over as source code in a repository under your control, with the credentials, configuration and documentation another team needs to maintain it.
Which services does the factory cover?
AI software, AI agents, custom software, workflow automation, AI prototypes, apps and products, and websites, all by the same team and the same process.
Why does the time zone matter?
We work from Santo Domingo on UTC−4: the same time as the US East Coast in summer and one hour ahead in winter, so a North American team shares its working day with ours. We work in English and Spanish and reply to a first message within 24 hours.
Who is a software factory for?
For small and mid-size businesses, for North American companies that want a nearshore team in a time zone that overlaps US Eastern hours, and for businesses in the Dominican Republic: anyone who needs a product designed, built and kept running by one team.
Questions about software factories
What is a software factory?
A software factory is a company that designs, builds and maintains custom software from start to finish, with one team and a process it repeats. Unlike an agency that only designs, it takes on the whole product: the idea, the design, the code, the launch and what comes after.
How is a software factory built, and in what stages?
Around a process the same team repeats on every project, not around one-off effort. Ours has four stages: understand the need, prove it with a creative AI proof of concept ready in days, build what it validated, and launch and keep improving it. You review the proof first and then each delivery.
Why do software factories fail?
The risk we design against is building the wrong thing efficiently: a repeatable process does not check the idea. That is why ours starts by understanding the problem and puts a proof of concept in your hands in days, while changing the idea is still cheap.
What does nearshore mean for a software factory?
It means the team works in a nearby time zone. From Santo Domingo we are on UTC−4: the same time as the US East Coast in summer and one hour ahead in winter, so calls, reviews and questions fit the same working day.
How much does a project cost, and how long does it take?
It depends on what has to be built, which is why we start by understanding it. An AI proof of concept is ready in days, and a full product is planned in stages, with clear dates from the start. After the first conversation we send you the scope and the quote in writing, with no commitment.
